Connected Resilience

Graceful like a swan,

she glides through trouble waters,

never giving up

'Connected Resilience' is a crochet art project in collaboration with Transition Year Students from Meánscoil Muire gan Smál, Roscommon.

This project celebrates the ingenuity, creativity and resourcefulness of women in history who supported their families with their cottage craft skills.

Irish crochet lace was introduced to Ireland during the Great Famine. Lace making schools were formed in impoverished communities and provided women with the means to earn a small income.

To honour the resilience of strong women in their community, the students of Meánscoil Muire gan Smál learned how to crochet and dedicated each piece of crochet work to a special woman in their lives. Making connections to the female role models in their community inspired the students to create a collaborative lace art wall piece to celebrate the role of unsung women heroes in society.

This project was funded by Creative Engagement.
