'Solas' is an inter-generational art project created with the Inishbofin National School, Co. Galway, as part of an artist in residency program in 2014. Celebrating the Unesco International Year of Light 2015 the school children together with their grandparents, parents and members of the island community created an art exhibition based on stories from the island before the time of electricity.
As part of the project the children invited their grandparents, relatives and neighbours to tell stories from back in the olden days.
They heard tales of shipwrecks, of milking cows and butter-making, of twisting sugan-ropes and thatching houses, of homework done by candle-light and children carrying two sods of turf to school to keep the teacher warm.
Using mono-printing techniques the children illustrated their stories in a joint art workshop and narrated the stories back to their parents and grandparents in a puppet show.
The project was sponsored as part of the Artist in School Residency program funded by the Galway County Council Arts Office.
